Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Des Moines County, Iowa

St John Condos helps travelers from Des Moines County, Iowa, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days at the Westin St John Resort on St. John. Our local team answers questions before you book, so you can plan with confidence.

If you live in Des Moines County, you may be used to long stretches of flat farmland and cold winters, so a week of warm water and sandy shoreline can feel like a real change of pace. A stay on St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, is built around the water. Mornings can start with a swim or a short snorkeling trip, and afternoons can be spent under an umbrella with nothing urgent on the calendar. The villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week, which suits a snorkeling-focused trip well. You can settle in, set your own pace, and return to the beach as often as you like. Many visitors find that a week gives enough room to rest, explore a few quiet coves, and still feel unhurried when it is time to head home.

Planning your beach week from Des Moines County

  1. Getting to the island. Most visitors from Des Moines County fly to St. Thomas, which uses the airport code STT. From there, take a taxi to Red Hook and board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan for a little extra time between connections, and keep your snorkel gear in your carry-on so it is ready the moment you arrive.
  2. Choosing when to go. Iowa winters are cold, so many travelers from this part of the Midwest choose to leave during the colder months and enjoy warm island weather instead. The Virgin Islands stay warm year round, so you can pick the timing that fits your schedule. Think about school calendars and work leave, then look for a week that gives you room to relax.
  3. Planning the stay. Renting a villa by the week gives you space for a kitchen, a comfortable base between swims, and a steady rhythm for snorkeling trips and beach days. Before you book, make a rough list of what matters most to you, such as calm bays or easy shore access. Then send your questions to our local team, who can help you match your plans to the right villa.
