Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Union County, Iowa

St John Condos helps travelers from Union County, Iowa, plan a shared family trip to St. John, where a week in a villa at the Westin St John Resort gives three generations room to gather together. Our local team answers questions before you book.

A trip with grandparents, parents, and children asks for a different kind of planning than a couple's getaway. Travelers from Union County, Iowa, often think first about who needs a comfortable bed, who wants a quiet morning, and who will want to be on the water. A villa rented by the week at the Westin St John Resort on St. John can hold all of those needs under one roof, with space to spread out when the day calls for it. Iowa winters are cold, so many families from the region are ready for warm, bright days when they plan a shared escape. St. John keeps a warm climate through most of the year, which suits both the youngest travelers and the oldest. Plan together before you leave, and let each generation name one thing they hope to do, so the week feels shared rather than scheduled around one person.

Planning a Union County family trip

  1. Getting to the island. Most visitors reach St. John by flying into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT. From there, a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Since older relatives may find long days of travel tiring, ask your group what pace feels right, and build in a restful first afternoon once everyone arrives.
  2. Choosing when to leave Iowa. Think about the season your family can actually travel together, since school calendars and work schedules differ across three generations. Winter departures from Union County often appeal because the contrast with home is so clear. Talk through the options with everyone early, so the grandparents, parents, and kids can all commit without rushing the decision.
  3. Planning the stay. Renting a villa by the week gives a multigenerational group room to share meals, keep separate quiet corners, and rest without leaving the group. Agree on a shared budget for dining, excursions, and a few special outings. Driving on St. John is on the left, so consider whether everyone will drive or whether one person will take on that role for the group.

Frequently asked questions

Is a villa a good fit for grandparents traveling with young children?

Many families find a villa works well for mixed ages because each generation can retreat to its own space and then regroup for meals. Tell our team about mobility needs and sleeping arrangements, and we will help you think through which layout will keep everyone comfortable through the week.

How do we coordinate a trip when relatives live in different places?

Start with a shared group message and pick one person to gather dates from everyone. Once a week is chosen, our local team can answer questions about the villa and the stay before you book, so your family can settle the details together with confidence.
