If you are coming from Taylor County, Iowa, you are starting from the middle of the country, far from any ocean. A week on St. John is a very different kind of trip from a week at home, and it helps to know what to expect before you pack. The island sits in the US Virgin Islands, where the weather stays warm through most of the year and the pace of life is slower than many Midwest towns. Many travelers from Iowa find that a villa suits them better than a standard hotel room. A villa gives you space to spread out, a kitchen for simple breakfasts, and a quiet base after a day of swimming or hiking. St John Condos rents villas at the Westin St John Resort, and the team can talk through which layout fits your group before you commit to anything.

Planning a week on St. John from Taylor County

  1. Getting to St. John. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan for a full travel day, and allow room for the connections you will make on the way from the Midwest.
  2. Choosing when to leave Iowa. Winters in Iowa are cold, so many people from Taylor County choose to travel during the cooler months back home, when a warm island feels like a real break. Think about school calendars, work schedules, and how much sun you want. The island stays warm year round, so any season can work well.
  3. Planning the stay. Villas are rented by the week, which suits a full exploration of the island. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left side of the road, which takes some getting used to. Ask the St John Condos team about the villa setup and the Westin resort grounds so you can plan your days around your interests.
