For many families in Emmet County, a trip to the islands has sat on the calendar for years, waiting for the right season and the right moment. Iowa winters are long and gray, and that contrast is exactly why a warm, quiet week on the water can feel like a true reward. This page is written for travelers who want to make that trip feel like the splurge it is, without rushing the planning. A villa stay at the Westin St John Resort gives you room to spread out, cook a little, and settle into island pace. Rather than moving from one hotel room to another, you take over a home base for the whole visit. Whether you are marking an anniversary, a milestone birthday, or simply years of saving, we can talk through what suits your group before anything is booked.

Getting from Emmet County to St. John

  1. Reaching the islands. Most visitors from Iowa fly into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan your connections with some slack in case your first flight is delayed, since a missed ferry can cost you a morning of your planned arrival.
  2. Picking your season. Iowa travelers often prefer to leave during the coldest months back home, when the islands are pleasantly warm. Think about the rhythm of your own year, including school calendars, work commitments, and any family events. Once you have a window in mind, tell us your dates and we will help you think through what that stretch of the calendar tends to feel like on St. John.
  3. Planning the stay. Villas are rented by the week, so a full week gives you time to settle in rather than rushing from one plan to the next. Decide early whether you want to drive yourself, and remember that on St. John you drive on the left. Share your group size, your must-haves, and your budget ceiling with our team, and we will help you choose a villa that fits.

Frequently asked questions

Is a week in a villa worth it compared with a hotel room for a special trip?

For many groups, yes. A villa gives you separate spaces, a kitchen for quiet breakfasts, and a home base that feels like yours. Hotel rooms can be lovely too, but a villa tends to suit longer, slower trips where you want to rest as much as you explore.

Do I need to plan transportation from Emmet County all the way to the villa?

You will need to plan the flight into St. Thomas, a taxi to Red Hook, and the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Our team can explain how the pieces fit together so that the last leg of your trip feels simple after a long day of travel from Iowa.
