Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Runnells, Iowa
St John Condos can help travelers from Runnells, Iowa, plan a beach-centered trip to St. John, where villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week and the local team answers questions before you book.
Runnells sits in the heart of Iowa, a long way from any ocean, so a beach trip starts as a change of pace. Many travelers from here are looking for warm sand, clear water, and a few quiet days away from the flat fields and cold winters that define so much of the Midwest. St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, offers exactly that kind of break. Planning a beach-focused stay means thinking about the rhythm of the day. You might want to wake early for a swim, spend afternoons under a shade tree, and keep evenings slow. A villa rented by the week gives you room to settle in, which suits a beach trip better than a rushed itinerary built around sightseeing.

Planning a beach trip from Runnells
- Reaching the island. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook, where the passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Pack light, since you will be moving bags on and off a ferry. Keep in mind that driving on St. John is on the left, so plan your rental car carefully if you choose one.
- Choosing your season. Iowa winters are cold, which makes the Caribbean warmth appealing in the colder months. Think about when you can most easily get away from work and school at home. Traveling in the cooler months of the year from Runnells tends to feel like the most dramatic change, though the islands are warm throughout the year, so choose the timing that fits your calendar.
- Planning your week. A week on the beach works well when you leave some open days. Pick one or two outings you truly want, and let the rest unfold around the water. Ask the St John Condos team any questions about the villa and the resort before you book, so your plans match what the property offers and you arrive knowing what to expect.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a car for a beach trip on St. John?
It depends on how much you want to explore. Many beach-focused guests stay close to their villa and rarely leave the resort area. If you do plan to drive, remember that traffic moves on the left side of the road, which takes some getting used to. The St John Condos team can talk through your options before you book.
What should a traveler from Runnells pack for the beach?
Bring lightweight clothing, swimwear, sun protection, and comfortable sandals for sand and walkways. Since Runnells is far inland, you may find that you need less winter gear than you expect. Pack a light layer for cooler evenings, and check with the St John Condos team if you have questions about what the villa provides.
