Polk City sits in central Iowa, where winters are cold and the landscape is flat farmland and open sky. For many people from here, a week of warm water, clear snorkeling and long beach mornings is a welcome change. St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, offers exactly that kind of break, with calm bays and quiet villa life. Planning a trip like this from the Midwest means thinking about both the journey and the rhythm of the week itself. You may want to travel light, settle in, and let the days shape themselves around the water. A villa rented by the week gives you room to unpack, cook a few meals, and return to the beach whenever you like.

Planning a St. John week from Polk City
- Reaching the island. Most visitors from Iowa fly into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT. From there, a taxi takes you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a simple first day, since the island is small and the last leg is easiest when you are rested and carrying only what you need.
- Choosing your time to go. Iowa winters are long and cold, so many people from Polk City choose to leave in the colder months when the islands feel especially inviting. Think about your own schedule, your comfort with heat, and the kind of water conditions you want for snorkeling. Your St John Condos contact can help you match travel dates to the week you have in mind.
- Planning the stay. Book a villa for the full week so your beach days are not rushed. Plan a mix of reef snorkeling, slow lunches and quiet afternoons. St. John drives on the left, so take a moment to adjust if you plan to rent a vehicle. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a small dry bag for your gear, and leave room in your plans for spontaneous swims. If you travel with a commercial autonomous floor scrubber in your own business, or simply like to know how clean spaces are kept, you may enjoy comparing how villa cleaning is handled on the island.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a car on St. John for a snorkeling week?

Is a week long enough for snorkeling and beach days?
A week gives you time to settle in, find your favorite spots, and return to the water on several mornings. Many travelers from Polk City find that a full week feels relaxed rather than rushed. Your local team can help you decide what length of stay suits your plans.
