State Center sits in the middle of Iowa, where summers are warm and winters are cold enough that many families look forward to a change of scenery. A trip to St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, offers a very different kind of break, with warm Caribbean weather and a slower pace that suits children and parents alike. Villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week, which gives a family room to settle in rather than rushing from place to place. Planning a family trip from the heart of Iowa takes some thought, but none of it has to be complicated. Most visitors reach St. John by flying into St. Thomas, taking a taxi to Red Hook, and then boarding the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Once you arrive, you will notice that driving on the island is on the left, which is worth remembering before you take the wheel. A local team can talk through these details with you before any booking is made.

Planning your family trip from State Center
- Getting from the area. Start by looking at how your family will reach St. Thomas, the airport most visitors use. From there, a taxi will take you to Red Hook, where the passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Pack for the ferry crossing and the luggage that comes with it, since bags will need to move with your family on each leg of the journey.
- Choosing when to leave Iowa. Think about the school calendar and your family's rhythm before choosing dates. Winter in Iowa can be harsh, so many families from State Center find a warm-weather break especially welcome in the colder months. Talk with the St John Condos team about the season you have in mind, and they can help you weigh what suits your children and your work schedule.
- Planning the stay. Because villas are rented by the week, a family can build a stay around downtime, shared meals, and time together at a comfortable pace. Consider what your children will enjoy, how many beds you need, and how you want to spread out your days. Lay these plans out early, and ask the St John Condos team anything you are unsure about before you commit.
