Planning a family trip from Long Point

  1. Getting to St. John. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Pack light for the transfers, since you will be moving bags and children between vehicles and the boat. Keep important documents and medications in a bag you can reach easily during the day.
  2. Choosing when to leave. Winters in Illinois are cold, so many families from Long Point are glad to head south when the snow starts to fall. Think about school calendars, work leave, and the weather you want to enjoy on the island. St. John stays warm through most of the year, so the timing is mostly about your family schedule. Talk through the options early so you have time to arrange everything.
  3. Planning the stay. A villa rented by the week suits families who want space, a kitchen, and a home base for the day. Plan a loose schedule with a mix of beach time, rest, and a few activities chosen by the kids. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, which may take some getting used to. Ask the St John Condos team about the villa layout and what to expect before you arrive.
