Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Alexander, Illinois

St John Condos is a local team that helps travelers from Alexander, Illinois, plan a family trip to St. John in the US Virgin Islands. They answer questions before you book a villa at the Westin St John Resort, so three generations can settle in together.

Traveling from Alexander with grandparents, parents, and children asks for a little more planning than a couple's getaway. Everyone has different energy levels, different tolerance for heat, and different ideas about what a good day looks like. St John Condos rents villas at the Westin St John Resort on St. John, and a villa gives a multigenerational group room to spread out, keep their own schedules, and still gather for dinner on the same terrace. Alexander sits in a part of Illinois where winters are cold and grey, so a trip south to warm water can feel like a real change of season for everyone at once. Older relatives may want shade and quiet mornings, while younger ones want the water. Planning for both, and talking it through with our team before you book, tends to make the week feel easier for the whole family.

Getting from Alexander to St. John

  1. Reaching the islands. Most visitors from Illinois fly into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan for a bit of luggage handling at each step, and consider how easily your oldest travelers can manage stairs, curbs, and boarding. Ask us which arrangement suits your group.
  2. Choosing when to travel. Illinois winters are long, so many families from Alexander pick a window that gets them out of the cold while the islands are at their most comfortable. Think about school calendars, work commitments, and whether anyone in the group prefers quieter weeks. Some relatives may find the heat easier to handle at certain times of year, so compare options with your family before settling on dates.
  3. Planning the week. A villa rented by the week works well for three generations because it offers separate bedrooms, a shared kitchen, and outdoor space for everyone. Decide early who will handle groceries, who needs a dedicated quiet room, and which days are for active outings and which are for rest. Share the plan in writing so no one feels left out, and bring any mobility aids or medications your group needs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a villa better than a hotel room for a three-generation trip?

For most multigenerational groups, yes. A villa gives grandparents a quiet space away from the noise of children, gives parents a kitchen for simple meals, and keeps everyone together in one place. Separate bedrooms and a shared living area make it easier for each person to take breaks without leaving the group. Our team can walk you through the layouts before you decide.

Do I need to know how to drive on St. John?

Driving on St. John is on the left, which may feel unfamiliar if you are used to driving on the right at home in Alexander. Some families prefer to arrange rides or plan for one driver who is comfortable with the change. Think about who in your group will take the wheel, and ask us about getting around before you book, so the first day goes smoothly for everyone.
