A week of snorkeling and beach days is one of the simplest reasons to head south from Lemont, Illinois, when the winter cold settles over the Midwest. St. John rewards slow mornings with clear water, sandy shorelines, and a pace that asks very little of you. Many visitors find that the first full day is the one where they finally stop checking the clock at home. Lemont sits in a part of the country where winter means gray skies and long stretches of cold, so the contrast with a Caribbean island is part of the appeal. Days on St. John can be spent wading out with a mask, reading in the shade, or simply watching the water change color. Planning ahead keeps the week relaxed, and that is where a local team can help.

Planning Your Week from Lemont

1. Reaching St. John. Most visitors from the Chicago area fly into St. Thomas, which is the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a little buffer for your connections, since travel days from the Midwest can be long and unpredictable. Keep your snorkel gear in your carry-on if you want it close at hand.
2. Choosing Your Departure Season. Lemont travelers often leave Illinois during the coldest months, when a warm week feels most welcome. Shoulder seasons can bring a different feel to the water and the crowds on the beaches. Think about what matters most to you, whether that is calm seas, quiet sand, or simply the comfort of knowing the weather will cooperate. Our team can talk through the trade-offs with you.
3. Planning Your Stay. Villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week, which suits a snorkeling-focused trip well. Think about which beaches you want to reach, and remember that driving on St. John is on the left side of the road. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a good mask, and a light layer for evenings. If you are bringing a larger group, let us know early so we can match you with the right home.
