Horizon West sits in central Florida, where summers are warm and humid and the days are long for children who want to be outside. A family trip to St. John offers a different rhythm: a small island, calm water, and a villa that gives everyone room to spread out. Many families from this part of the state find that the change of scenery is exactly the reset they were hoping for. Planning a trip with children means thinking about bedrooms, meals, and what happens on a rainy afternoon. Planning a family trip from Horizon West
- Getting to the island. Most visitors from Horizon West fly into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT. From there, a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Pack car seats or booster seats in mind for the taxi ride, and remember that driving on St. John is on the left, so plan rental or transport accordingly.
- Choosing when to travel. Florida families often pick the islands for a winter break or a spring holiday, when northern weather is at its coldest and the Caribbean feels especially inviting. Consider your children's school calendar and any local events you already plan to attend. Booking early gives you more choice of villa layouts for a larger group.
- Planning the stay. Villas are rented by the week, which suits families who want a slower pace and time to explore. Decide in advance how many bedrooms you need, whether you want a pool for the children, and how you will divide meals and outings. Talk through these choices with the St John Condos team, who can answer your questions before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Is St. John a good place to bring young children?
Many families find St. John calm and easygoing, with a small-island feel and a villa setting that gives kids room to play. Think about your children's ages, their comfort with boats and changing routines, and how much structure they need. The St John Condos team can talk through what to expect so you can judge whether the trip fits your family.
Do we need to bring a car on the island?
Getting around St. John depends on where you stay and what you want to do each day. Keep in mind that driving is on the left side of the road, which can feel unfamiliar at first.
