Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Gilbertville, Iowa

St John Condos can help travelers from Gilbertville, Iowa, plan a first trip to the Caribbean, with villas at the Westin St John Resort rented by the week and a local team ready to answer questions before you book.

If Gilbertville is home for you and the Caribbean has only existed in pictures so far, a first trip can feel like a lot to organize. Iowa is a long way from warm water, and the planning details are different from a weekend drive somewhere closer. That is where a little guidance goes a long way, and it is the reason this page exists. A first visit to the islands rewards a calm, direct approach. The Westin St John Resort sits on St. John in the US Virgin Islands, and villas there are rented by the week, which gives you room to settle in rather than rush from place to place. Plenty of people who grew up with cold winters find the slower pace is the real surprise of the trip.

Getting from Gilbertville to St. John

  1. Reach St. Thomas first. Most visitors from the Midwest fly into St. Thomas, the airport code STT, and that is the usual starting point for the trip. From there a taxi takes you to Red Hook, where the passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. It is worth confirming the connection details with your own airline before you leave Iowa, since schedules can shift.
  2. Pick your season in Iowa. Think about the weather you are leaving behind. Iowa winters are cold, so many travelers from Gilbertville plan a trip for the coldest months when the contrast feels most welcome. The islands stay warm year round, so the choice comes down to what suits your calendar, your budget, and how much you want to be away from home.
  3. Plan the week itself. Once you have arrived, a rented villa gives you a home base for the stay. Driving on St. John happens on the left, which can feel strange at first, so take a moment before you head out. Our team can talk through what to pack for a first visit, how the villa suits your group, and any questions about the trip, before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

St. John is part of the United States, so a passport is not required for travelers from Gilbertville. Many people still bring a photo ID and proof of citizenship, since airlines and the ferry may ask.
