Gerster sits in the middle of the country, where the landscape is far from any ocean. For many people from here, a week of snorkeling and lazy beach days is a welcome change of scenery. The warm water and clear shallows of St. John offer a very different kind of rest than a long drive through the countryside. Planning that kind of trip from a landlocked state takes a little thought, and a few decisions matter more than others. Think about how you want your days to feel, whether you want a quiet villa to return to in the evening, and how much you want to plan ahead. Careful choices early on make the rest of the week feel easy and unhurried.

Getting from Gerster to the beach
- Reach St. Thomas first. Most visitors coming from Gerster fly into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT. From there, a taxi will carry you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Give yourself a relaxed buffer for the transfer so the first day starts calmly rather than rushed.
- Pick your travel season. Missouri winters are cold and gray, so many travelers from Gerster choose to leave during the colder months at home to enjoy warm sun and clear water. Consider whether you prefer the energy of a busy stretch or a quieter period with fewer people on the beaches. Either way, packing light swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, and a snorkel mask you trust will serve you well.
- Plan your villa stay. Villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week, which suits a snorkeling-focused trip well. Settle on a rough plan for which beaches you want to visit and which days you prefer to rest. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, so take that into account if you plan to rent a vehicle for trips around the island.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy snorkeling on St. John?
Not necessarily, but comfort in the water makes a big difference. Many visitors from inland states start with a calm shallow beach, wearing a flotation vest if they feel unsure. Take your time, practice with your mask at the water's edge first, and build confidence before venturing further out.
Should I bring my own snorkel gear from Missouri?
Many travelers prefer to bring their own mask and snorkel, since a fit that feels right can make a real difference over a full week. Ask the St John Condos team before you book about what is available near your villa, and plan ahead so you are not searching for gear after you arrive.
