Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Elvaston, Illinois

St John Condos helps travelers from Elvaston, Illinois, plan a first Caribbean trip to villas at the Westin St John Resort on St. John, US Virgin Islands, and the local team answers questions before you book.

For many people in Elvaston, a first trip to the Caribbean is something they have pictured for years before they actually plan it. Illinois winters are long and gray, and a week of warm water and bright sand can feel like a reset. St John is a small island with a relaxed pace, and the villas at the Westin St John Resort give you space to settle in rather than rush from one attraction to the next. Planning from the middle of the country takes a little more thought than planning from a coastal city, but it is manageable. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, the STT airport, take a taxi to Red Hook, and catch the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Once you arrive, you will notice that driving on St. John is on the left, which is worth remembering before you take the wheel. Villas are rented by the week, so you can settle in fully.

Your first Caribbean trip from Elvaston

  1. Getting to St. John. Most travelers from the Elvaston area reach St. John by flying to St. Thomas, the STT airport. From there, a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry across to Cruz Bay. Plan for that final connection with some room to spare, and keep your luggage manageable, since you will be carrying it onto the boat yourself.
  2. Choosing when to leave Illinois. Think about the season before you book. Winter in Illinois is cold, so many families from the area enjoy leaving during those months, while others prefer the quieter stretches of the year. Consider school calendars, work commitments, and the weather you want to find when you step off the plane, then choose the week that fits your household.
  3. Planning the stay. Because villas are rented by the week, a full stay gives you time to rest, explore slowly, and learn the rhythm of the island. Decide early whether you want a car, how many meals you plan to cook, and which beaches or walks matter most to you. Sharing those priorities with the St John Condos team before you book helps shape a stay that feels right.
