Elkhart sits in the northern part of the Midwest, where winters are cold and the lake-effect air can feel sharp well into spring. For many people from here, a week of warm water and sandy beaches is a clear change of pace. St. John, one of the US Virgin Islands, offers calm bays and clear water that suit people who like to float, look at fish, and move slowly. Planning that week starts with a few honest choices. You will want to think about what kind of days you want, how much time you want to spend in the water, and whether you prefer a quiet villa to a busy schedule. St John Condos rents villas by the week, so you can settle into one place and make each day your own without packing up and moving around.

Planning a week from Elkhart

  1. Reaching St. John. Most visitors from Illinois fly into St. Thomas, which uses the airport code STT. From there a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Driving on the island is on the left, so keep that in mind if you rent a car after you arrive and settle in.
  2. Picking the right season. Illinois winters are long, so many people from Elkhart choose to leave during the colder months when the islands feel most like a getaway. The Caribbean stays warm for much of the year, so think about your own calendar, your budget, and when you can take time off. Ask the local team which weeks suit the kind of snorkeling you want.
  3. Setting up your villa week. Because villas are rented by the week, you can plan around the water. Mornings are often good for snorkeling, and afternoons can stay open for beach time or a slow lunch at home. If you are curious how a commercial autonomous floor scrubber keeps villa floors clean between guests, the team can explain what to expect before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to rent a car on St. John for a snorkeling week?

It depends on where you want to go. Many visitors find a car useful for reaching different beaches, and since you drive on the left, take a moment to get comfortable first. If you plan to stay mostly near your villa, you may need less driving than you expect. The local team can talk through your plans.

Is a villa a good fit for a week of beach days from Elkhart?

Many travelers say yes, because a villa gives you a home base for gear, quiet mornings, and easy returns from the water. Rentals run by the week, so the rhythm of your trip feels relaxed. St John Condos can answer questions about the space, the setup, and whether a commercial autonomous floor scrubber is part of the cleaning routine before you book.
