Winters in Iowa can settle in long and gray, and for many families in Elgin the idea of trading snow boots for sandals becomes hard to resist. A villa stay on St. John offers a slower rhythm, with warm air, open water, and the quiet of a small island. It is a chance to rest somewhere the calendar feels different from the one at home. Planning a trip this far from the Midwest takes a little thought, and it helps to start with a clear picture of what you want from the week. Some travelers want a sun-filled routine, while others want space to read, swim, and cook meals together. St John Condos can talk through those preferences with you before any decisions are made, so the plan fits your household rather than a generic itinerary.

Getting from Elgin to St. John
- Reaching the islands. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, which has its own airport, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan this sequence with your luggage in mind, since each handoff is simpler when you pack lightly and keep important items within reach.
- Choosing when to leave Iowa. Think about the stretch of winter you most want to escape. Late winter in Iowa tends to feel the longest, so many travelers from the Midwest find that stretch the most rewarding time to go. Consider school calendars, work obligations, and whether you would like a quieter stretch of the season for your stay.
- Planning the stay. Villas on St. John are rented by the week, which gives you room to settle in rather than rushing from place to place. Once you have a rental in mind, plan a few simple daily anchors like breakfast, a swim, and an evening meal. Remember that driving on the island is on the left, so take that into account if you plan to get around by car.
