Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Effingham County, Illinois

St John Condos helps travelers from Effingham County, Illinois, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John, where villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week and a local team answers questions before you book.

Effingham County sits in the heart of Illinois, where summers are warm and humid and winters bring a stretch of gray, cold weather that makes a few sunny days on the water feel especially welcome. For many families and couples from this part of the Midwest, a week on St. John offers a clear change of pace: warm water, calm beaches, and time to float over reef life with a mask and snorkel. Planning that week from a flat, inland county takes a little thought, but the process is simpler than it may seem. Most visitors reach the island by flying into St. Thomas, then taking a taxi to Red Hook and the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Once you arrive, you can settle into a villa, slow down, and spend your days on the sand and in the shallows. St John Condos is glad to talk through these details with you before you commit.

Planning a snorkeling week from Effingham County

  1. Getting from home to St. John. Most travelers from Effingham County fly to the St. Thomas airport, which is the usual gateway to St. John. From there, a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where the passenger ferry crosses to Cruz Bay. Keep your snorkel gear in your carry-on if you can, since checked bags can be slow to arrive, and plan for a relaxed first day.
  2. Choosing when to leave Illinois. Because Illinois winters are cold, many people from Effingham County prefer to head to the islands during the colder months back home, when the sun and clear water feel most rewarding. Summer is warm and busy in its own way. Think about your schedule, your comfort with heat, and the kind of beach days you want, then choose the window that suits your household best.
  3. Planning the stay on St. John. Villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week, which gives you room to settle in, pace your snorkeling, and rest between swims. Because driving on St. John happens on the left, some visitors prefer to rely on taxis for their first few trips. Before booking, share your group size and preferences with the St John Condos team so they can help you find the right fit.

Frequently asked questions

Is St. John a good place for snorkeling for someone who has never snorkeled before?

Many first-time snorkelers find St. John a comfortable place to start, since the water is generally calm and warm and you can wade in from the shore. Practice breathing through your snorkel in shallow water before venturing out. The St John Condos team can share general advice on how to prepare before your trip.

Do I need to rent a car on St. John for beach days?

Some visitors choose to rent a car, while others prefer taxis and the resort's easy access to the beach. Remember that driving is on the left side of the road, which takes some getting used to. Think about how you want to move around, and ask the St John Condos team which option fits your plans.
