Planning a family trip from Decatur
- Getting to the island. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Pack light for the ferry, keep essentials in a carry-on bag, and plan for a relaxed pace once you step off the boat, especially if you are traveling with young children or older relatives.
- Choosing when to leave. Winters in Illinois can be cold and gray, so many families from Decatur choose the winter months for a sunny break. Others prefer a summer getaway when school is out. Think about your children's schedules, your work commitments, and the kind of weather you want, then compare those points before settling on your travel dates.
- Planning the stay. Renting a villa by the week gives your family a home base for the whole visit. Decide early who will handle the grocery runs, which days are for the beach, and which are for quiet time at the villa. St. John is driven on the left side of the road, so if you plan to rent a car, make sure the adults who will drive are comfortable with that before you arrive.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need a car on St. John?
Many families find a car helpful for getting around the island, though some prefer to rely on taxis for certain trips. Remember that driving is on the left, which can feel unfamiliar at first. Talk with the St John Condos team about your plans before you book so you can choose the transportation that fits your group.
How do families from Illinois usually handle the trip home?
Most travelers from Decatur retrace the same route in reverse, taking the passenger ferry back to St. Thomas and then flying home. Leave yourself a comfortable margin on departure day, especially with children, so the journey stays calm. The St John Condos team can answer any questions about check-out before your stay.
