Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Dakota, Illinois

St John Condos helps travelers from Dakota, Illinois, plan a trip to the Westin St John Resort on St. John, US Virgin Islands, with villas that suit three generations traveling together. Ask the local team anything before you book.

A trip for three generations asks a lot from one plan. Grandparents want a slower pace, parents want time to breathe, and younger travelers want room to move. From Dakota, a quiet town in northern Illinois where winters are cold and long, the warm air and water of the Caribbean can feel like a reset. St John Condos rents villas at the Westin St John Resort on St. John, and a villa gives each generation space of its own while keeping everyone within easy reach. Think of the trip as a shared table rather than a single itinerary. Some mornings the group can sit together on a terrace, other afternoons people can drift off to nap or read. Villas are rented by the week, which suits families who want a steady rhythm instead of a rush from one stop to the next. Before you commit, the St John Condos team can talk through layouts, accessibility, and which rooms sit closest to the pool, so the plan fits the people who matter most to you.

Getting from Dakota to St. John

  1. Reaching the islands. Most visitors from Dakota fly into St. Thomas, which uses the airport code STT. From there a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where the passenger ferry crosses to Cruz Bay on St. John. With grandparents and young children in tow, plan your connections with some slack, and ask about luggage and mobility needs early. Once you land, the crossing is a gentle, scenic way to begin the holiday together.
  2. Choosing when to travel. Leaving a Dakota winter behind is the main reason many families choose the islands, so a midwinter departure can feel especially welcome. Consider school calendars, grandparents' health needs, and how much warmth each person wants. Shoulder periods can bring calmer days for older travelers, while the busiest weeks tend to fill quickly. Let the group decide together, and the St John Condos team can share what the calendar looks like for your dates.
  3. Planning the stay together. Divide the trip into shared and private time. Agree on a few group meals and one outing everyone can enjoy, then leave open space for naps and independent wandering. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, so consider whether a relaxed group will rely on taxis or a rental. Bring comfortable footwear and gear for the sun. Ask the local team to help you think through the logistics before you book.
