Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Bentley, Illinois
St John Condos can help travelers from Bentley, Illinois, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days at a villa on St. John, where the Westin St John Resort sits close to Cruz Bay.
Bentley sits in the flat farmland of central Illinois, where winters are cold and grey for much of the year. For many families and couples from here, a week on a Caribbean island is the kind of change that feels earned. St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, offers clear water, sandy beaches, and easy access to snorkeling spots that suit both beginners and experienced swimmers. Most visitors reach St. John by flying into St. Thomas, then taking a taxi to Red Hook and the passenger ferry across to Cruz Bay. Once you arrive, a villa rented by the week gives you room to slow down, rinse your gear after each swim, and plan your beach days around the weather. St John Condos is a local team, so you can ask questions before you commit to anything.

Planning your island week from Bentley
- Getting to the island. Plan your route from Bentley to St. Thomas first, since most travelers connect there before continuing by taxi and ferry to St. John. Allow yourself a relaxed day of travel so you are not rushing onto the boat. Keep your swimwear, sunscreen, and any snorkel gear you prefer in your carry-on, because you will want them the moment you step onto the sand.
- Choosing your season. Leaving Illinois in the depths of winter makes the contrast with warm Caribbean water especially appealing, though the islands stay pleasant through much of the year. Think about when you can take time away from work and school, then compare how busy the beaches may be during those weeks. Settle on a window that fits your schedule, then start looking at villas before the calendar fills.
- Setting up your stay. A week-long villa rental works well for snorkeling because you can plan each morning around calm water and return to rinse masks and fins in your own space. Tell the St John Condos team what you hope to do, such as reef swims, lazy beach afternoons, or a mix of both, so they can point you toward a fitting home. Ask any question you have before booking, and confirm the details you care about most in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to rent a car on St. John?
Many visitors find a rental car useful for getting around the island, since public transport is limited. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, which can feel unfamiliar if you are used to driving on the right at home. Take a few careful moments to adjust before heading out on the roads.
Is snorkeling a good choice for a Bentley family on a first island trip?
Snorkeling suits many first-time visitors, especially those who take a short practice session in calm, shallow water before heading out further. Bring your own mask and fins if they fit well, and a rash guard can help on sunny days. Ask the St John Condos team any questions about the water before you book.
