Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Barstow, Illinois

St John Condos helps families in Barstow, Illinois, plan a relaxed island trip, with villas at the Westin St John Resort on St. John that give everyone room to spread out after the flight south.

A family trip from Barstow, Illinois, usually begins with a long stretch of winter weather behind you and a wish for warm sand and easy mornings. St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, offers exactly that kind of change, and a villa at the Westin St John Resort gives a family more room than a standard hotel room would. Your kids can have their own space, and you can have a quiet kitchen for breakfast before the day starts. Planning from a Midwest city means thinking early about the connections between home and the islands. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, then take a taxi to Red Hook and catch the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Driving on St. John is on the left, so many families prefer to plan their outings on foot or with a guided ride. Our local team is glad to talk through these details with you before you commit to any dates.

Planning a family trip from Barstow

  1. Getting from Barstow. Most families from Barstow reach St. John by flying to St. Thomas, which is the usual gateway for the islands. From the airport you take a taxi to Red Hook, then board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a little slack for transfers, especially if you are traveling with young children or a lot of luggage, and keep your travel documents handy for each step.
  2. Choosing when to leave Illinois. Winter in Illinois can be cold and gray, which makes the Caribbean feel especially inviting from December through the spring. Many families also consider the shoulder seasons, when the weather stays warm and the crowds are lighter. Think about school calendars and work schedules, then ask our team which weeks suit your family best before you lock anything in.
  3. Planning the stay. A villa rented by the week gives your family a kitchen, living space, and room for everyone to rest. Sketch a loose plan for beach days, a few activities, and some unscheduled time so the trip feels like a break rather than a checklist. If your family includes a teen who wants independence, or a younger child who needs naps, a villa lets you adjust the day without fuss.

Frequently asked questions

For many families, yes. A villa at the Westin St John Resort offers separate sleeping areas, a kitchen for simple meals, and outdoor space that suits kids. Compared with a single hotel room, it tends to feel less cramped and gives parents a bit more quiet in the evenings.

How should we handle the trip from Illinois to the islands with children?

Plan your route through St. Thomas, then the taxi to Red Hook and the ferry to Cruz Bay, and pack snacks and essentials in your carry-on. Keep kids' comfort items within reach and build in a relaxed first day. Our team can answer specific questions about the transfer before you book.
