Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Westside, Iowa

St John Condos helps travelers from Westside, Iowa, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days at a villa on St. John, where most visitors fly into St. Thomas and continue by ferry to Cruz Bay.

Westside sits in the middle of the country, far from any ocean, so a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John is a real change of scenery. The island is warm year round, with clear water and quiet bays that suit people who want to spend their mornings in the sea and their afternoons on the sand. Many visitors from Iowa find that the slower pace of island life is as much of the reward as the reef itself. Planning this kind of trip from a landlocked town takes a little more thought than a short drive to the lake. You will want to settle your dates, your packing list, and your plan for gear early, including a mask and fins that fit well. St John Condos is a local team that answers questions before you book, so you can talk through the details with people who know the island and the Westin St John Resort area before you commit.

Your week of snorkeling from Westside

1. Reaching the island. Most visitors from Westside reach St. John by flying into St. Thomas, which has its own airport code, STT. From there a taxi takes you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry across to Cruz Bay. Plan for this connection with some slack, since island transfers are part of the experience. Once you land, remember that driving on St. John is on the left, which feels unusual for many Iowa drivers at first.
2. Choosing when to go. Iowa winters are cold and gray, so many people from Westside choose the colder months for a warm escape, while others prefer the quieter stretches of late spring or early fall. The island stays warm all year, so the choice comes down to crowds, school calendars, and how the water looks to you. Think about the weather you are leaving behind and the kind of beach week you want before you pick a date.
3. Planning your stay. Villas on St. John are rented by the week, which suits a snorkeling trip well because it gives you time to settle in and explore reefs at your own pace. Consider where you want to be for morning swims and how you will get to different beaches. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag for your camera, and a plan for a rest day. Ask the St John Condos team any question before you book, from villa layout to gear rental.
