Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Thornburg, Iowa

St John Condos can help families from Thornburg, Iowa, plan a villa stay on St. John, where the Westin St John Resort sits within reach of a relaxed island week. Ask us anything before you book.

Thornburg sits in the middle of the country, far from any ocean, so a trip to St. John usually begins with a change of scenery that feels real. Many families from Iowa look forward to swapping flat farmland and cold winters for warm water, a slower pace, and a villa where everyone can spread out. Planning for children, grandparents, and different ages takes a little thought, and that is where a local team can help. A week rented by the villa gives a family room to settle in rather than rush from place to place. Kids can nap on their own schedule, adults can read on a lanai, and meals can be simple. St John Condos works with travelers like you to match the home to your group, so the trip feels calm from the first morning rather than crowded or complicated.

Planning a family trip from Thornburg

  1. Getting to the island. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, the passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan for the fact that luggage, car seats, and tired children all add to the load, and pack a small bag for the ferry. Once on island, remember that driving is on the left side of the road.
  2. Choosing when to leave Iowa. Thornburg winters bring cold and snow, so many families choose to leave during the coldest stretch of the year. Think about school calendars, work commitments, and whether your children handle long travel days well. Warm weather on St. John is steady through the year, so the season matters more for your family's routine than for the climate itself, and a little flexibility helps when booking.
  3. Planning the stay. Rent by the week so your family has room to rest and explore at its own pace. Make a short list of what matters most, such as a pool, beach access, or a kitchen for quick breakfasts. Bring simple items like sunscreen and comfortable shoes. Before you book, send your questions to the St John Condos team, who can explain what to expect.
