Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Steamboat Rock, Iowa
St John Condos can help three generations from Steamboat Rock, Iowa, plan one shared villa stay at the Westin St John Resort, with room for everyone, a plan that works for grandparents, parents, and children alike.
A trip for three generations asks for a different kind of planning than a couple's getaway or a single family's vacation. Grandparents may want easy mornings and a quiet deck, parents may want a little time to themselves, and younger travelers may want to be in the water all day. Steamboat Rock sits in the heart of Iowa, where long summers and cold winters shape how families think about time away, so the first step is simply agreeing on what everyone hopes to get from the week. A villa rented by the week gives a multigenerational group room to spread out while still sharing meals and stories together. Separate sleeping spaces, a common kitchen, and a place to gather at the end of the day make a difference when ages and energy levels vary. Our team at St John Condos can talk through layouts and arrangements before you book, so the trip feels like one shared week rather than a series of compromises.

How Steamboat Rock families plan the trip
- Getting to the islands. Most visitors reach St. John by flying into St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, and then taking a taxi to Red Hook. From there the passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay. For a group spanning three generations, it helps to book connecting flights together, keep a shared list of everyone's needs, and plan for older travelers to have an easy pace on arrival day.
- Choosing when to go. Winters in Iowa are cold, so many families from Steamboat Rock look toward the cooler months of the year for a warm-weather escape. Talk with the whole group about school calendars, work schedules, and the health and comfort of your oldest and youngest members. A week that suits the grandparents as well as the grandchildren is usually worth a little extra planning up front.
- Planning the stay. Think about how each generation will spend its days. Some will want a slow morning on the deck, others a longer walk or a swim, and everyone may enjoy a few shared meals. Ask St John Condos about villa layouts, kitchen setups, and how the rental week is structured so that the group can come together and separate comfortably, with plenty of room for each person's pace.
Frequently asked questions
Is a villa a good fit for a group spanning three generations?
Often it is. A villa offers separate bedrooms, a shared kitchen, and common living space, which lets grandparents, parents, and children each have their own corner while still eating and relaxing together. Tell our team how your group is made up and we will help you find a layout that fits.
How do we get from Steamboat Rock to St. John with older family members?
Most families fly into St. Thomas, airport code STT, then take a taxi to Red Hook and the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Booking seats together and planning for a relaxed arrival day can make the journey much easier for everyone, especially older travelers.
