Planning a family vacation from Portland, Iowa, means balancing a lot of moving parts: kids with different energy levels, a few different interests, and a long trip from the middle of the country to a small island. Many families find that a villa gives them room to spread out, cook a simple breakfast, and settle into a rhythm that suits everyone. Portland sits in a part of the country where winters bring real cold, so the warm, steady weather on St. John can feel like a genuine change of pace. The Westin St John Resort offers a base with villas rented by the week, which lets your family slow down together instead of rushing from one plan to the next.

Getting from Portland to St. John
- Reach St. Thomas first. Most visitors from Portland fly into St. Thomas, which uses the airport code STT. From there, a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Keep car seats, snacks, and a small bag of essentials close at hand, since the transfer is the part of the trip that tests patience most.
- Choose your season wisely. Winter in Iowa is a strong reason to head south, so many families from Portland plan their trip during the colder months at home. Think about school calendars, your children's comfort in heat and humidity, and how much rain you are willing to plan around. Ask the St John Condos team which weeks suit a family with your mix of ages.
- Plan the stay with care. Because villas rent by the week, a family can settle in and avoid packing and unpacking every day. Make a short list of must-do activities, leave open time for lazy mornings, and remember that driving on St. John is on the left. Booking a rental car for flexibility is a practical choice for many visiting families.
Frequently asked questions
Is a villa a good choice for a family from Portland?
For many families, yes. A villa offers separate space, a kitchen for simple meals, and room to relax after a busy day. Because rentals are by the week, your family can settle in rather than moving every few nights, which often makes a big difference with children along.
Can the St John Condos team help us plan before we book?
Yes. The St John Condos team is a local group that answers questions before you commit. Share your family's size, the time of year you are considering, and any needs you have, and they can help you think through options at the Westin St John Resort.
