Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Mendon, Illinois
St John Condos helps travelers from Mendon, Illinois, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John, with villas rented by the week at the Westin St John Resort.
Mendon sits in the flat, farm-filled country of central Illinois, where winters bring cold, grey days and most people are glad to trade them for warm water. A week of snorkeling and lazy beach time on St. John is a good way to make that change feel complete. The island is small and green, and its calm bays suit people who want to spend their days in the sea and their evenings with a slow meal. Because villas here are rented by the week, you can settle in and let the trip find its own pace rather than packing every day. Some travelers from home prefer to spend mornings in the water and afternoons reading on a shaded porch. St John Condos can talk through which kind of week suits your group before you commit, so the plan matches what you actually want from the trip.

Getting from Mendon to St. John
- Reaching the island. Most visitors from Illinois fly into St. Thomas, which is the usual gateway to St. John. From the airport you take a taxi to Red Hook, then board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Plan your connections with some slack, since island travel rewards a relaxed attitude. Keep your snorkel gear and sunscreen in your carry-on bag so the first swim can start the moment you arrive.
- Choosing when to leave. Illinois winters are long, so many families from Mendon aim for the coldest months back home. Pick dates that fit your school calendar and work schedule, then check with the team at St John Condos about how the island feels in the season you have in mind. Booking early leaves you more room to choose a villa that suits your group and the beach days you have planned.
- Planning the stay. Once you have a villa, sketch a simple outline for the week rather than a strict itinerary. Mark a couple of mornings for snorkeling, a few afternoons for shade and books, and one evening to try a new place to eat. Bring a reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag for your phone, and a light layer for breezy evenings. Driving on St. John is on the left, so keep that in mind if you rent a car.
Frequently asked questions
Is a week long enough for snorkeling on St. John?
A week gives you room to snorkel several times without rushing. You can try the water on a calm morning, rest on a hot afternoon, and go back out when the conditions suit you. Many visitors from Illinois find a week leaves them feeling rested rather than hurried, which makes the time in the water more enjoyable.
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
Many travelers prefer to bring their own mask, snorkel, and fins so the fit feels familiar from the first swim. Others choose to rent gear once they arrive. If you are unsure, send your questions to St John Condos before you book, and the team can help you decide what is worth packing from home.
