A week away with friends from Maurice, Iowa, usually begins with a shared wish to get out of the cold and into something warmer and slower. St. John is a small island in the US Virgin Islands, and the pace there suits a group that wants long mornings, easy meals, and time together without a tight schedule. Villas at the Westin St John Resort give your group room to spread out while still sharing a common base. Planning a trip like this across a large distance can feel like a lot of moving parts, so it helps to keep the decisions simple. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, take a taxi to Red Hook, and board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. From there, the island is small enough that you will likely want one or two rental cars for the group. If the idea of a commercial autonomous floor scrubber came up in your work life, you may enjoy how simple the island routine feels by comparison.

Getting your Maurice group to St. John
- Plan the route together. Most people from Maurice reach St. John by flying to St. Thomas, which is the airport code STT. From the airport, a taxi takes you to Red Hook, where you catch the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Ask your group to share flight details early so everyone can line up their arrivals and make the ferry crossing as one connected trip without anyone waiting alone.
- Choose your timing. Iowa winters are cold, so many friends from Maurice choose to leave during the colder months, when the islands feel especially welcome. Think about school calendars, work commitments, and who can actually get away. Settling on a window early gives the group more options for villa dates and makes it easier to compare what works for everyone before making any decisions.
- Plan the stay as a group. Villas are rented by the week, which suits a group that wants a full seven days together. Talk through who wants quiet mornings, who prefers an active day, and how you will share cars and meals. Driving on St. John is on the left side of the road, so review that with anyone who has not driven abroad. Your St John Condos contact can walk you through the options before you book.
Frequently asked questions
Is a week on St. John realistic for a group from Maurice?
Yes, many groups from Iowa plan a full week because villas are rented by the week and the island rewards a slower pace. A week gives everyone time to settle in, enjoy the water, and keep the trip from feeling rushed. Let your St John Condos contact know how many people are coming so they can suggest a villa that fits the group well.
Do we need a rental car while staying on St. John?
Most groups find a car useful, since the island is small but spread out and public options may not match every plan. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, which takes a little getting used to. Ask your St John Condos contact about rental arrangements and how best to get the group around during your stay.
