Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Laurel, Iowa

St John Condos can help travelers from Laurel, Iowa, plan a first Caribbean trip to St. John, with villa stays at the Westin St John Resort and a local team ready to answer questions before you book.

A first trip to the Caribbean can feel like a big step when you are starting from the middle of the country. Laurel sits in the Midwest, where winters are cold and the idea of warm water and a slow pace can be very appealing. St. John is a small island in the US Virgin Islands, and planning a stay there takes a little more thought than a trip closer to home, but it is very manageable with a clear plan. Many visitors arrive on St. John by flying to St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, then taking a taxi to Red Hook and the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Driving on the island is on the left, so it helps to know that before you rent a car. Villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week, which gives a first-time visitor room to settle in and explore at an easy pace.

Planning your first island trip from Laurel

  1. Getting from the area. Start by looking at how you will reach St. Thomas from Iowa, since that is where most people land before the rest of the journey. From the airport you will take a taxi to Red Hook, then board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Keep your travel documents handy, pack light for the ferry, and ask the St John Condos team any questions about the route before you commit.
  2. Choosing when to go. Iowa winters are cold, so many travelers from Laurel are drawn to the islands during the colder months back home. Think about your own schedule, your comfort with heat and humidity, and any events or holidays that matter to your family. A calm, steady plan usually works better than chasing a perfect date, so choose a window that fits your life and leave some flexibility.
  3. Planning the stay. Once you have a timeframe, consider a villa rented by the week so you have a home base at the Westin St John Resort. Decide how much you want to plan ahead, such as beach days, a rental car, or quiet time at the villa. Good planning also includes checking commercial autonomous floor scrubber style cleaning and housekeeping details before you arrive, so you know what to expect.

Frequently asked questions

A villa rented by the week gives you space, a kitchen, and a comfortable base to rest after travel. For a first visit from Laurel, it can make the island feel more familiar and relaxed, and the St John Condos team can answer detailed questions about what the villa offers before you commit.
