Planning a family trip from Hartley

  1. Getting to the island. Most visitors reach St. John by flying into St. Thomas, which uses the airport code STT. From there, a taxi takes you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Families traveling from Hartley often find it helps to build a little slack into the connection, since a trip with children goes more smoothly when nobody is rushing. Keep car seats, snacks, and medications within easy reach in your carry-on bag.
  2. Choosing when to leave. Iowa winters are cold, so many families from Hartley choose to travel during the island's drier months when the weather feels most inviting. School calendars often shape the decision more than anything else, so check your district's dates early. Compare a few possible weeks before settling on one. A local team can help you weigh the tradeoffs before you commit.
  3. Planning the stay. A villa rented by the week gives your family a kitchen, extra space, and a home base between days of exploring. Sort out who needs a bedroom, where the children will sleep, and how you will manage meals. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, so plan your rides with that in mind. Write down your must-do activities and leave room for unplanned afternoons.
