Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Gillett Grove, Iowa
St John Condos helps three generations from Gillett Grove, Iowa, plan one shared stay in a villa at the Westin St John Resort on St. John, with a local team ready to answer questions before you book.
Gillett Grove sits in the middle of the country, where winters are cold and the land is wide open. For a family spanning grandparents, parents, and children, a trip to the Caribbean can feel like a big step, and it helps to start with a shared picture of what everyone wants from the week. Some want quiet mornings, others want time in the water, and a few simply want a table where everyone can sit together at the end of the day. A villa rented by the week gives a multigenerational group room to spread out while still staying close. Each person can have a corner to rest, and the group can come together for meals without anyone feeling squeezed. Sorting out who needs the most space and who wants the most independence is a good first conversation, and it shapes almost every choice that follows, from the layout you request to how you divide the daily plans.

Planning a shared trip from Gillett Grove
- Getting to St. John. Most visitors fly to St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook, where the passenger ferry runs across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan for older relatives to have an easy first leg, and consider whether anyone in the group would prefer a slower pace with a planned rest before the ferry. Sharing the travel details with everyone early keeps the arrival day calm for all three generations.
- Choosing when to leave Iowa. Leaving a cold Midwestern winter for warm Caribbean weather is one of the most appealing parts of this trip. Think about school calendars, work commitments, and the health needs of your oldest travelers, then pick dates that suit the group rather than the calendar alone. A winter departure often feels especially welcome to everyone, and talking through the timing together helps the whole family feel part of the decision.
- Planning the stay together. Before you arrive, decide on a loose rhythm for the week, such as a shared breakfast, free afternoons, and one or two group outings. Driving on St. John is on the left, so anyone who will drive should know that before they get behind the wheel. A short planning call with the St John Condos team can help you match your villa and your plans to what your family needs.
Frequently asked questions
Is a villa a good choice for a family with grandparents and young children?
Many multigenerational groups prefer a villa because it offers separate spaces to rest and a common area for meals and time together. Tell the St John Condos team who is in your group, including any mobility needs, so they can help you think through the layout and location before you book.
How do we handle different ideas about how to spend the days?
A simple approach is to agree on a few shared activities and leave the rest open for individual choice. Some families set one group meal each day and let everyone else pick their own pace. Talking this through before you leave Gillett Grove usually makes the week feel relaxed rather than scheduled.
