Winters in central Illinois can feel long, gray and cold, and many people in Gifford start looking for a change of scenery around the time the snow piles up. A week on a warm Caribbean island can be a welcome reset, with bright daylight, sea air and a slower pace that is hard to find at home. St. John is a small island in the US Virgin Islands, reached by most visitors through St. Thomas and then a short ferry ride. Villas at the Westin St John Resort give you room to spread out, cook a few meals and rest, which suits families and couples who want more space than a standard hotel room offers.

Planning your escape from Gifford

  1. Getting from the area. Most travelers from Gifford fly to St. Thomas, which has the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a bit of extra time for connections, and check your baggage allowance before you pack, since island days are relaxed but travel days can run long.
  2. Choosing when to leave. Illinois winters are coldest in the deep months of the year, so many people from Gifford prefer to leave as soon as the cold settles in and return before the weather at home warms up. Think about school calendars, work obligations and how much sun you want. The islands stay warm year round, so the choice mostly comes down to your own schedule.
  3. Planning the stay. Villas are rented by the week, which works well for travelers who want to settle in rather than move every few nights. Note that driving on St. John is on the left, so take a moment to get comfortable before heading out. Ask the St John Condos team any questions about the villa, the area or your dates before you book.

Frequently asked questions

For many travelers from Gifford, a full week is the right length. It gives you time to unwind, get used to the slower island rhythm and still come home feeling refreshed. Because villas are rented by the week, the stay fits naturally into that kind of trip. If your schedule is tighter, the St John Condos team can talk through what works for your dates.

Do I need to rent a car on St. John?
