A family trip from Downey, Iowa, to St. John asks a lot of everyone, from the youngest traveler to the grandparents who may be coming along. You are leaving a landlocked state in the middle of the country and heading to a small island in the US Virgin Islands, so it helps to think early about how the days will feel. Our role is to talk through the practical side with you, so the planning feels calm rather than rushed. Most visitors reach St. John by flying into St. Thomas, taking a taxi to Red Hook, and boarding the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Driving on St. John is on the left, which is worth remembering if you plan to rent a car. Villas are rented by the week, which suits families who want space to unpack, cook a few meals, and let the rhythm of the island set the pace.

Planning a family trip from Downey

  1. Getting from Downey. Begin by mapping the trip from home to the island. Most families fly from the area to St. Thomas, then travel by taxi to Red Hook and catch the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Ask the people in your group how they handle long journeys, and build in room for snacks, naps, and a little slack. A relaxed start often makes the whole vacation feel easier.
  2. Choosing when to leave Iowa. Think about the season you are leaving behind. Iowa winters are cold, so many families from the Midwest are glad to trade snow boots for sandals, but school calendars and work schedules still matter. Pick a window that fits everyone, then talk with our team about the island weather you can expect at that time so the packing list matches the conditions.
  3. Planning the stay. Once the dates are set, sketch a loose plan for the week. Decide which days are for beach time, which are for slow mornings, and which are simply open. Since your villa is rented by the week, you have room to cook at home, rest between outings, and keep the youngest travelers on a comfortable routine. Plan the stay around how your family actually likes to travel.
