Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Cotter, Iowa

St John Condos helps travelers from Cotter, Iowa, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John, with villas rented by the week near the Westin St John Resort. Their local team answers questions before you book.

Cotter sits in the middle of Iowa, a long way from warm water, which is part of what makes a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John feel like such a change. Many people from the Midwest spend their winters watching the sky turn gray, so arriving to clear water and steady sunshine can feel almost unreal in the best way. St John Condos rents villas at the Westin St John Resort, and the team there is glad to help you think through the details. A snorkeling week rewards a little planning. You will want time to rest in the morning, time for the water in the afternoon, and room to simply sit still with a book. A villa rented by the week gives you that space, along with a kitchen for simple breakfasts and a quiet place to unwind after a day in the sun. Ask the local team what suits your group before you commit.

Planning your trip from Cotter

  1. Reaching the island. Most visitors from Iowa fly into St. Thomas, airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, the passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a little slack in your schedule for connections, and keep in mind that driving on the island is on the left, so renting a car is a choice worth discussing with the team before you arrive.
  2. Choosing your season. Iowa winters are cold, so many travelers from Cotter head south when the snow is deepest and the days are short. The warm months on St. John are a common pick for snorkeling, though the islands stay pleasant year round. Think about when your calendar is free, how much sun you want, and whether you prefer a quieter stretch of the year.
  3. Setting up your villa week. Because villas are rented by the week, a seven day stay fits neatly into a snorkeling plan. Map out your favorite days for the water, keep a few open for rest, and bring gear you know you like, such as a comfortable mask and reef-safe sunscreen. St John Condos can answer questions about the villa and the resort before you book, so you can settle the plan with confidence.
