Winters in Birmingham, Iowa, can feel long, with cold air, grey skies, and days spent indoors. For many people there, the appeal of a warm island stay is simple: a change of scenery and a break from heavy coats. St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, offers that kind of reset, with warm weather and a slower pace than most mainland getaways. Staying in a villa at the Westin St John Resort gives you more room to spread out than a standard hotel room. You can plan quiet mornings, unhurried meals, and time simply to rest. St John Condos rents these villas by the week, and our team is glad to talk through what a stay could look like before you commit to anything.

Planning your winter escape from Birmingham

  1. Reaching St. John. Most visitors from Iowa fly into St. Thomas, airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a little buffer for connections, especially if your route includes a stop on the way. Once you arrive, remember that driving on the island is on the left, which takes some getting used to.
  2. Choosing when to leave. Iowa winters are at their harshest in the deepest part of the season, so many people from Birmingham look toward the coldest months as the moment to leave. Think about your own calendar, school breaks, and work commitments. Warm weather in the islands is steady through the year, so the choice often comes down to what suits your household best rather than the forecast.
  3. Planning the stay itself. Once your dates are set, decide how much structure you want. Some travelers prefer a full itinerary, while others are happy with a few anchors and open time. Consider how you will get around the island and what you plan to pack for warm days. Our team can answer detailed questions about the villa so the week feels settled before you leave Iowa behind.

Frequently asked questions
