Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Bayard, Iowa

St John Condos can help families from Bayard, Iowa, plan a relaxed island stay at the Westin St John Resort, with villas rented by the week and a local team ready to answer questions before you book.

A family trip from Bayard, Iowa, to St. John asks for a bit more planning than a drive to a nearby lake, and that is part of the appeal. Iowa sits in the middle of the country, far from any ocean, so many families are used to long car rides and quiet farm roads. Bringing that same easy spirit to the Caribbean means thinking early about flights, packing for warm weather, and deciding how much time the children will want for the beach versus the pool. St. John is a small island in the US Virgin Islands, and most travelers reach it by flying into St. Thomas and then taking a taxi to Red Hook for the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Once you arrive, you will drive on the left, which is worth remembering with a car full of kids. Villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week, giving families room to spread out, cook a few meals, and settle into a slower rhythm than a hotel stay usually allows.

A simple plan for families leaving Bayard

  1. Getting from Iowa. Most families from Bayard will begin with a flight from a regional airport to a larger hub, then continue to St. Thomas, the island airport that serves the Virgin Islands. From there, a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where the passenger ferry crosses to Cruz Bay on St. John. Keep car seats, medications, and snacks in your carry-on, and check the ferry and taxi arrangements with the St John Condos team before you travel.
  2. Choosing when to go. Iowa winters are cold and often snowy, so many families from Bayard look to the islands for a break in the depths of the year. Think about school calendars, holiday schedules, and how much warm weather your children enjoy. Traveling in a season that suits your family can make the beaches, the sea, and the simple outdoor time feel more relaxed for everyone.
  3. Planning the stay. A villa rented by the week works well for families who want a kitchen, separate sleeping areas, and space to unwind after a day in the water. Make a rough list of what matters most, such as beach time, quiet mornings, or lazy afternoons by the pool. Share those priorities with the St John Condos team, who can help you choose a villa that fits your group and answer questions before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a car on St. John?

Many families find a rental car useful on the island, since it gives you flexibility for trips to beaches and dinners. Remember that you will drive on the left side of the road. The St John Condos team can talk through your plans and let you know what fits the way your family likes to travel.

Is a villa better than a hotel room for a family from Bayard?

It depends on your family. A villa rented by the week offers more space, a kitchen for simple meals, and room for everyone to spread out. If your children want a busy resort schedule, a hotel may suit you better. The St John Condos team can help you compare the options honestly.
