St John Condos helps travelers from Ashland, Illinois, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John, with villas rented by the week at the Westin St John Resort. Our local team answers questions before you book.
Ashland sits in the middle of Illinois, where summers feel warm and humid and winters are cold enough that many families start dreaming of open water long before spring arrives. A week of snorkeling and lazy beach days can be a welcome change from flat fields and long gray stretches of the calendar. St. John is a small island in the US Virgin Islands, known for clear water and calm bays that suit slow mornings with a mask and fins. Staying in a villa at the Westin St John Resort gives you room to spread out, rinse your gear, and return to a quiet space between swims.

Planning your week from Ashland
- Reaching the island. Most visitors from the Midwest fly into St. Thomas, which is the airport code STT. From there, a taxi will take you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Plan for a little extra time on travel days so the connections feel relaxed rather than rushed.
- Choosing your timing. Illinois winters are a common reason people head south, and the islands stay warm through much of the year. Think about when you can truly step away from work and school, and whether you prefer a season with a bit more rain or a stretch with steadier sun for snorkeling.
- Building your stay. Villas are rented by the week, which suits a snorkeling trip well because mornings can go to the reef and afternoons to the beach. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, bring a dry bag for your phone, and remember that cars drive on the left, so take that into account if you plan to get around by vehicle.
