If you live in Ottumwa, the Caribbean can feel like a world away. Iowa is a landlocked state in the middle of the country, where winters are cold and the nearest ocean is a long way off. A first trip to the islands is a big change in scenery, climate, and pace, and it helps to know what to expect before you go. St. John is a small island in the US Virgin Islands, and it has a relaxed feel that many first-time visitors find appealing. Most people arrive by flying to St. Thomas, then taking a taxi to Red Hook and the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Renting a villa by the week gives you room to slow down and settle in, and our team is glad to walk you through each piece of that plan.

Planning your first island trip from Ottumwa
- Getting to St. John. Most visitors from Iowa fly to St. Thomas, which uses the airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there the passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a little room in your schedule for connections and for the ferry, and keep in mind that driving on St. John is on the left, which is worth remembering if you rent a car.
- Choosing when to leave Iowa. Iowa winters are cold, so many travelers from Ottumwa choose to head south during the colder months when the islands feel especially welcome. The islands have a warm climate year round, so the right season depends on what you enjoy most. Think about your own tolerance for heat, your budget, and whether you want a quieter stretch or a busier one.
- Planning the stay. Villas are rented by the week, which suits a first trip well because it gives you time to adjust to the island rhythm. Choose a villa that matches the number of people in your group, and ask our team about the layout before you book. A simple plan for each day, with room left open, tends to make a first Caribbean stay feel relaxed and unhurried.
