Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Oakland, Iowa

St John Condos helps friends from Oakland, Iowa, plan a shared week at a villa on St. John, a quiet island in the US Virgin Islands. Our local team answers questions before you book, so the group can settle details together.

A week away with friends often starts as a loose idea over coffee in Oakland, and it gets real when everyone starts asking about beds, shared meals, and how to spend the days. A villa at the Westin St John Resort gives a group one place to gather, with room to spread out in the evening and come back together at the table. For travelers who are used to long winters and wide open farmland, the change of scenery can feel like a reset. Friends from Iowa tend to bring a practical mindset, and that works well on an island. Plan the basics early, like who handles groceries, who tracks the shared budget, and how you will split the driving. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, so the first trip in a rental vehicle deserves a calm start. Everything else can stay loose, which is the point of the trip.

Planning a week away from Oakland

  1. Getting to St. John. Most visitors from Oakland fly into St. Thomas (STT), then take a taxi to Red Hook and the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Share taxi costs among the group and confirm everyone's arrival day before anyone books a flight. Ask our team about the ferry timing so the group is not scrambling on the dock with luggage after a long journey from the Midwest.
  2. Choosing when to leave Iowa. Iowa winters are cold, so many friends from Oakland choose to leave during the coldest months, when a warm week on the water feels especially welcome. Shoulder seasons can also suit groups who want a little more space and a calmer pace. Talk through dates as a group, and settle on the window first, since a shared villa works best when everyone can commit to the same week.
  3. Planning the stay. Villas are rented by the week, so plan the group's days around that rhythm. Decide early who wants quiet mornings, who wants an active afternoon, and how meals will be shared. Give each person a clear role for the trip, such as packing snacks or organizing sunset plans. Ask St John Condos any questions about the villa before you book, so the whole group can plan with confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to rent a car to get around St. John?

Many groups find a rental vehicle useful for exploring the island, though you should plan for driving on the left. Ask our local team which options suit a group your size, and how to plan your route from the villa so everyone stays comfortable behind the wheel.

How should a group from Oakland split costs for a villa week?

Agree on a shared approach before you book, such as one person collecting funds and tracking expenses in a simple shared record. Clear, early agreements tend to keep a group trip relaxed, and our team can answer questions about what the villa includes so everyone knows what they are paying for.
