Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Madrid, Iowa
St John Condos can help travelers from Madrid, Iowa, plan a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John, with villas rented by the week at the Westin St John Resort and a local team ready to answer questions before you book.
Madrid sits in central Iowa, where summers are warm and humid and winters bring snow and cold wind. For many families and friends from Madrid, a week of clear water, soft sand, and easy time in the sun is a welcome change from the flat, closed-in months at home. St. John, in the US Virgin Islands, offers exactly that kind of break, with calm bays that suit snorkeling and beaches that invite a slow pace. A snorkeling week works best when the days have a shape. Some travelers like to start early, drive the winding roads while the air is cool, and spend the afternoon in the water. Others prefer long lazy mornings on the sand with a book and a cold drink. St John Condos rents villas by the week at the Westin St John Resort, so you can settle into one place and build your days around the water rather than a packed itinerary.

Planning a St. John week from Madrid
- Reaching the island. Most visitors from the Madrid area fly to St. Thomas, which is the usual airport code STT, and then take a taxi to Red Hook. From there, a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Pack light for the transfers, and keep your snorkel gear in a carry bag you can manage yourself. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left side of the road, so take a moment to adjust before you head out in a rental car.
- Choosing when to go. Iowa winters are long and cold, so many travelers from Madrid aim for a trip that lands when the weather at home is at its harshest. Island temperatures stay warm through most of the year, which means the water is inviting whenever you choose to visit. Think about school calendars, work obligations, and whether you want quieter weeks or a livelier feel, then pick the window that suits your group best.
- Planning your stay. A villa rented by the week gives a group of friends or family room to spread out, cook a few meals, and keep snorkel gear close to the door. Before you book, sketch a loose plan for each day: one morning for a favorite snorkel spot, one afternoon for the beach, and open time for rest. Share the plan with your group so everyone knows what to expect and what to pack.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear from Madrid?
You can bring your own mask, snorkel, and fins, which many travelers prefer for a good fit. If you would rather travel light, ask the St John Condos team about gear options before you book so you can plan what to carry from Iowa and what to set aside.
Is a rental car necessary for a beach week on St. John?
Many guests find a rental car makes it easier to reach different beaches and snorkel spots at their own pace. Keep in mind that you drive on the left side of the road. The St John Condos team can answer questions about getting around before you commit to a plan.
