A first trip to the Caribbean can feel like a big step when you live in the middle of the country. Hawthorn Woods sits in northern Illinois, where winters are cold and grey for much of the year, so many people here start dreaming about warm water and white sand. St. John offers that without the crowds of larger islands, and a villa gives you room to slow down and settle into island life at your own pace. Planning from a distance takes some care, and it helps to know what to expect before you go. The island runs on its own rhythm, driving is on the left, and the pace is relaxed. Whether this is your first time outside the country or simply your first time in the tropics, our team is glad to talk through the details with you and help you feel ready before you commit to anything.

Getting from Hawthorn Woods to St. John
- Plan your route south. Most visitors fly into the airport on St. Thomas, which is the usual gateway to the islands. From there, a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Keep your travel documents handy and allow a relaxed buffer between connections, since island travel rewards a patient mindset from the very start.
- Choose your season. Illinois winters are cold, so many travelers from Hawthorn Woods choose to head to the islands during the colder months at home. Think about the weather you want, the kind of crowds you enjoy, and how much time you can take away from work and family. Our team can share what to consider so your timing fits your plans.
- Plan your stay. Villas at the Westin St John Resort are rented by the week, which suits first-time visitors who want time to unwind. Consider how many people are coming, what you hope to do each day, and whether you want a quiet base or a more active one. Reach out with questions and we will help you match your group to the right villa.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be an experienced traveler to visit St. John?
No. Many first-time visitors from Hawthorn Woods make the trip with no prior island experience. The journey involves a flight to St. Thomas, a taxi ride, and a passenger ferry, all of which are manageable with a little advance planning. Our team is happy to walk you through each step before you book.
What should I know about driving on the island?
On St. John, you drive on the left side of the road, which can feel unusual if you are used to driving at home in Illinois. Take a moment to get comfortable before heading out, and go slowly at first. If you would rather not drive, ask our team about your options when you contact us.
