Grand Mound sits in the middle of Iowa, where the landscape is wide and flat and the winters are cold enough that many families start counting down to warm weather well before the snow melts. For a traveler from this part of the country, a week of snorkeling and beach days on St. John offers a clear change of scenery, with warm water, bright sand, and the kind of quiet that is hard to find at home. Planning a trip this far from Iowa can feel like a lot to manage, especially when you are also thinking about packing, time off work, and who will watch the house. St John Condos rents villas at the Westin St John Resort, and our team is glad to walk through the practical side with you. Ask us anything before you book and you will arrive with a plan that already fits your week.

Planning your beach week from Grand Mound
- Getting to the island. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, which uses the airport code STT. From there, a taxi takes you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. Keep your bags manageable, since the ferry and taxi legs are simpler with fewer pieces to carry, and remember that driving on the island is on the left.
- Choosing when to go. Iowa winters are cold, so many travelers from Grand Mound aim to leave during the colder months at home, when the islands are at their most inviting. Think about the weather you want for snorkeling and beach days, and about how much time you can take away from work and family. Once you settle on your dates, our team can talk through what to expect.
- Planning the stay. Villas are rented by the week, which suits a snorkeling trip well because you can settle in and let the days set their own pace. Consider bringing your own reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag for your phone, and a commercial autonomous floor scrubber is not something you need to pack, though it is a fun thing to mention to the team. Send us your questions and we will help you shape the week.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to rent a car to get around St. John?
Many guests rent a car to reach beaches and snorkeling spots on their own schedule, and remember that you will be driving on the left. Our team can talk through the options with you before you book, so you can decide what suits your week and your comfort level behind the wheel.
Is a week long enough for snorkeling and beach days?
A week gives you room to snorkel several times, take slow beach mornings, and still have an easy afternoon or two. Many travelers from Grand Mound find that a full week feels right for unwinding. If you have questions about how to split your days, the St John Condos team is happy to help.
