Many travelers from the Midwest arrive wondering how to fit a tropical week into a schedule shaped by winter roads and busy work calendars. The good news is that the trip is simpler than it may look from Iowa. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, take a taxi to Red Hook, and catch the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay on St. John. A first Caribbean trip, planned from Dubuque

  1. Getting to St. John. Most travelers from Dubuque connect through a larger hub and then fly on to St. Thomas, the airport code being STT. From there, a taxi carries you to Red Hook, where you board the passenger ferry to Cruz Bay. Once you land on St. John, remember that driving is on the left, which is worth practicing before you take the wheel of a rental car.
  2. Choosing when to leave Iowa. Dubuque winters can be long and gray, so many people from Iowa choose the Caribbean for the months when the northern cold feels most stubborn. The islands stay warm year round, so the choice comes down to your own calendar and budget. Think about school breaks, work commitments, and the pull of the season you most want to escape when setting your dates.
  3. Planning the stay. Villas at the resort are rented by the week, which suits a first visit well because it gives you time to settle in without rushing. Decide early whether you want to be on the water, near the pool, or close to Cruz Bay. Pack light layers for air conditioned rooms and a good pair of walking shoes, and leave room in your plans for slow mornings.
