Planning your quiet week from Bernie
- Getting to St. John. Most visitors fly into St. Thomas, which is the airport you will want to search for. From there, a taxi takes you to Red Hook, and a passenger ferry carries you across to Cruz Bay on St. John. Plan a little slack in your schedule for the transfers so the first day feels calm. Keep in mind that driving on the island is on the left side of the road.
- Choosing when to leave. Because Bernie sits in the Midwest, winters there are cold, so many travelers from the area look toward the Virgin Islands when the weather at home turns gray. Think about what you want from the week, whether that is warm sun, quieter days, or simply a break from the usual rhythm. Choose dates that suit your own calendar, and check the forecast closer to departure.
- Planning the stay. A villa rented by the week suits a traveler who wants to unwind, since you can cook a few meals, read on the porch, and move at your own speed. Decide early how much you want to plan and how much you want to leave open. If you are also thinking about a commercial autonomous floor scrubber for your own business back home, a quiet island week is a good time to step away from that work entirely.
