Commercial Autonomous Floor Scrubber in Athens, Illinois

St John Condos helps travelers from Athens, Illinois, plan a first Caribbean trip to villas at the Westin St John Resort on St. John, and the local team answers questions before you book.

If you are heading to the Caribbean for the first time from Athens, the trip can feel like a lot to take in at once. The landscape, the water, and the pace of island life are very different from the flat farmland and four distinct seasons of central Illinois. A little planning goes a long way, and the St John Condos team is glad to walk through the details with you before anything is booked. Many Illinois travelers arrive in the islands with winter still fresh in their minds, so warm air and bright water can feel almost unreal at first. Renting a villa by the week gives you room to settle in, unpack properly, and let the trip find its own rhythm rather than rushing from one plan to the next. Ask us anything, from what to pack to how the island feels day to day.

Getting from Athens to St. John

  1. Reaching the islands. Most visitors reach St. John by flying into St. Thomas, which uses the airport code STT. From there you take a taxi to Red Hook and then the passenger ferry across to Cruz Bay. It is a simple sequence once you know it, and the team can describe each leg so nothing catches you off guard on arrival day.
  2. Choosing when to leave. Leaving Illinois in the depths of winter is a common reason people choose the islands, since the contrast with a cold Midwestern season is part of the appeal. Think about what you hope to enjoy, whether that is calm water, quiet mornings, or a lively stretch of sunshine. Share your preferred weeks with us and we will talk through what to expect.
  3. Planning your stay. A villa rented by the week suits a first trip well because you can cook a few meals, rest between outings, and set your own pace. Remember that driving on St. John is on the left, which is worth practicing before you take the wheel. Tell us what you enjoy most, and we will help you shape a stay that feels comfortable and unhurried.

Frequently asked questions

I have never been to the Caribbean. What should I expect on my first trip from Athens?

Expect warm air, strong sun, and a slower rhythm than you may be used to back home. Pack light layers for evenings, comfortable shoes, and sun protection. The island is small and relaxed, and most first-time visitors find it easier than they expected once they settle in. The team can share more details before you book.

Is it hard to get around St. John as a first-time visitor?
